NEW YORK – After yet another weak month, retailers are preparing to fight for their share of crucial back-to-school shopping. But they may have to keep discounting to keep consumers coming in, given escalating job uncertainty.
Particularly worrisome in yesterday’s same-store sales reports: Mall-based teen stalwarts such as Abercrombie & Fitch were among those hit hardest as families looked for bargains.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s largest retailer, is expected to be a big winner as it woos young shoppers with trendy electronics and fashions, but its sales are no longer included in the monthly data.
“We don’t see signs of recovery. This is not going to be a consumer-led boom anytime soon,’’ said Michael Dart, a retail strategist and leader of private equity practice for consulting firm Kurt Salmon Associates.
Ken Perkins, president of retail consulting firm Retail Metrics LLC, agreed, noting that the June retail reports indicate that many parents will forgo brands in favor of the lower-priced items and will buy less overall.
“Instead of buying four pairs of pants, they will buy three or two,’’ Perkins said. “There will be a continued focus on need-based and discounted items.’’
Retailers in all sectors reported weak same-store sales for June, but mall-based clothing stores suffered most compared with a year earlier, while some discounters scraped by. Same-store sales – sales at stores open at least a year – are considered a key indicator of a retailer’s health.
Even low-priced Costco Wholesale Corp. saw same-store sales decline compared with last June, when federal stimulus checks helped business.
Natick, Mass.-based BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc. said same-store sales fell 7.5 percent.
Bucking the trend was TJX Cos. The Framingham, Mass.-based discount retailer said its same-store sales rose 4 percent.
The International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs same-store sales tally for June was down 5.1 percent, worse than the latest forecast for a 4.5 percent decline.
The results were slightly worse than the sluggish average declines of 4.4 percent seen since February, the start of most retailers’ fiscal year.
Escalating job worries and rainy weather in much of the nation dampened shoppers’ appetite for buying summer staples such as shorts and dresses, resulting in sharper-than-expected sales declines for many merchants in June.
Results fueled increasing concerns about the back-to-school shopping season.
As retailers reported their monthly figures Thursday, the weakness cut across all sectors but hit clothing stores particularly hard.
Even Costco Wholesale Corp. saw same-store sales decline from June last year, when stimulus rebate checks helped business. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. no longer reports same-store sales each month.
Target Corp., which has been stumbling because of its reliance on nonessentials such as trendy jeans and towels, reported a 6.2 percent decline in same-store sales for June. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected a 5.6 percent drop. But the company expects to meet or exceed analysts’ expectations for second-quarter profit due in part to spending cuts.
Plano-based J.C. Penney Co. reported a better-than-expected 8.2 percent decline in June, saying children’s apparel sales suffered but Father’s Day merchandise was strong. Penney raised its second-quarter earnings guidance even though it expects July same-store sales to decline in the range of 13 percent to 16 percent.
Luxury continues to see weak numbers. Dallas-based Neiman Marcus Group said sales fell 20.8 percent in June.
“Consumers are under severe pressure on the job front, so discretionary spending is just not happening,” said Ken Perkins, president of retail consulting firm Retail Metrics LLC. “This is not setting up well for the back-to-school season.”
The International Council of Shopping Centers said June retail sales declined by 5.1 percent based on results at 32 chains. Sales in July may decline as much as 5 percent, according to Mike Niemira, the New York-based trade group’s chief economist.
“Tough times certainly will linger for most even through the summer,” he said Thursday. “I suspect that as we get to August, that’s when we’ll start to see better performance.”
June accounts for about 35 percent of second-quarter retail sales and marks the beginning of summer clearance as retailers make room for fall merchandise, according to Betty Chen, an analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities in San Francisco.
Merchants are relying more now on shoppers’ paychecks to fuel purchases because consumers’ two other key sources of funding – credit cards and home equity loans – have shrunk. But, seeing their earnings dwindle, shoppers are continuing to seek discounts.
Among the biggest disappointments in Thursday’s same-store sales reports were Abercrombie & Fitch Co., Children’s Place Inc. and Limited Brands Inc., which owns Victoria’s Secret.
Limited Brands struggled with a 12 percent drop in June same-store sales, while analysts expected a 7.9 percent decline. Gap Inc. posted a 10 percent decline, while analysts expected an 8.6 percent drop.
