LONDON (AFP) – Show business tycoon Simon Cowell and singer-actress Cheryl Cole swap insults in the new series of The X Factor starting on Satuday, previews showed.

First contestant was house-husband Stephen Hunter whose mixture of soulful vocals and dancing last seen at a 1980s school disco set the tone for the rest of the show. Despite missing his cue, the 41-year-old – who promised to "give it everything" – got the thumbs-up from all four judges.

Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell also makes waves in an appearance as a guest judge. Going by the reaction of her fellow judges, the constant references to her time in the Spice Girls and off-the-cuff advice to contestants about their "tone" soon wore thin.

Former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq has signed up as the new host of The Xtra Factor on ITV2.

According to reports, the first show also includes scenes of Cole collapsing with an illness that was later diagnosed as malaria.

Tempers flare when Cowell brands the Girls Aloud star a "brat" during an early audition and jokes about her catty behaviour by putting out a saucer of milk for her.

At one point Louis Walsh moans to the cameras that "Geri talks and she talks – some of it makes sense, not all of it".

Danni Minogue's place was taken at the auditions by a series of guest judges including former Neighbours star Natalie Imbruglia, singers Pixie Lott and Katy Perry, and Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls.

Not everyone did so well and one tuneless trio in London left the judges stunned into silence with a performance Cowell later described as "possibly the worst group we've ever had on this show".

The contestants are divided into four categories, boys aged 16 to 24, girls aged 16 to 24, over 24-year-olds and groups.

After Cole tells one disappointed group they should consider a career in children's television, Cowell sarcastically demands: "Have we got any cream?" and when he catches her pulling faces at him, he tells her: "You're a childish little brat."

Among the potential stars already identified was Gamu Nhengu,Burberry, an 18-year-old student who left her native Zimbabwe for Scotland five years ago.

After watching a particularly poor act, Halliwell says: "I don't know what to say," to which Walsh retorts: "That's a first."

The new series of The X Factor begins at 7.30pm Saturday on ITV1.

Her version of Katrina and the Waves' Walking On Sunshine wowed the judges, with Simon Cowell praising her "old school jazz voice".

Other potential stars included a singing waitress and a devoted Freddie Mercury fan who was given a rare second chance after her attempt to sing like her hero fell flat.

Betancourt returns to Colombia 2 yrs after r – Die

Betancourt, who was abducted in the midst of her presidential campaign in February 2002, earlier took part in an event paying tribute to military officers who helped free her through the complex intelligence operation.

"I always have the impression that I am fine, calm and happy, and suddenly I mention something,Diesel, and the sadness,Laguna Beach, tears and angst come back," the former hostage told AFP. "I am not yet in control of my emotions to the degree I would like."

"People can take you very high," she noted in the interview. "But a person remains what he or she is. It is important to maintain a distance between the highs and the lows and have the tranquility of knowing what one really is."

She said she still suffered pain as a result of her captivity.

"I have faith and hope that those who are kidnapped will be released soon and I call on the FARC to change course and become a peace alternative," Betancourt said Friday at a ceremony celebrating the Colombian military's successful "Operation Jaque" of July 2, 2008.

The former Colombian presidential candidate was held for more than six years by the FARC, and ultimately became a global symbol of the guerillas' hostages.

FARC rebels, active on nearly half of Colombian territory, still hold at least 19 soldiers and police officers who they hope to swap for some 500 guerrillas in Colombian jails.

It was Betancourt's first visit to her native country since a stopover of only a few hours in November 2008.

The US-backed operation freed 15 hostages of Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) — Betancourt, three US military contractors and 11 Colombian soldiers and policemen.

Since her liberation, Betancourt has been at the center of public attention and was even recommended for the Nobel Peace Prize. But she said in was important for her to remain humble.

BOGOTA (AFP) – Former Franco-Colombian hostage Ingrid Betancourt has urged the leftist FARC guerrillas Friday to free their prisoners as she celebrated the second anniversary of her own release.

The event consisted in a wreath laying ceremony to those who remain in captivity at the Jose Maria Cordova Military School (west of Bogota), with the heads of military forces and the Police and French diplomats.

The group has been at war with Colombian government since 1964.

WASHINGTON – Democrats wasted no time in making Republican Sharron Angle their top target after the tea party favorite who wants to wipe out Social Security and shutter the Education Department won the nomination to challenge Sen. Harry Reid.

His Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the Democratic National Committee and Nevada Democrats were quick to follow up with criticism of Angle — all in defense of Reid, a top target for the GOP. With a steady pace, the Democrats have churned out news releases about her conservative policies, her political allies and sniping among Nevada Republicans.

Blumenthal said he “misspoke” in claiming more than once that he served in Vietnam and apologized for his comments. He actually served stateside in the Marine Reserve during the war.

• Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner sent an message to her political e-mail list encouraging readers to support North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall in a June 22 runoff for the U.S. Senate nomination. Republican Senate hopeful Rob Portman unveiled his first television ads telling Ohio voters that he has visited every county and wants to put the state back to work.

The 30-second ad that is airing on cable and broadcast stations statewide focuses on Ohio’s high unemployment rate that hovers around 11 percent.

The telephone survey of 1,350 registered voters shows Blumenthal leading McMahon by 20 percentage points — 55 percent to 35 percent — in the race to fill the seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd.

“Three weeks after the Vietnam flap, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has lost a little more ground to Linda McMahon, but he still has a comfortable lead,” poll director Douglas Schwartz said.

This new poll shows voters’ opinions about Blumenthal’s misstatements about his military service have not changed, with 61 percent in both surveys saying it doesn’t make a difference in how they’ll vote in November.

No other candidate emerging from Tuesday’s primaries has received anything close to the criticism Democrats have heaped on Angle, a former state lawmaker. Angle used national tea party leaders’ support to topple Republican casino executive Sue Lowden, whom national Democrats eviscerated during the primary.
